“By taking
these vows, humanity will have in its hands the tools to bring about good human
society.” — The Sakyong, Jampal Trinley Dradül
This short commentary by the Sakyong
explains the relationship between the Shambhala vow and the enlightened society
vow, as well as their overall relationship to the refuge and bodhisattva vows.
It was written shortly after the two new vows were introduced in Autumn 2011.
As the Sakyong writes, “On reflecting
about the nature of the two vows, a further explanation was needed: an
understanding of the character and purpose of each vow and how it interfaces
with the great vows of refuge and bodhisattva. . . . May it help inspire the
next generation of Shambhalians.”
