This image of
Gesar of Ling depicts the warrior-king riding in clouds of blessings. Gesar is
in golden armor, seated on his red horse Kyang-gö Perpo. In his right hand, he
holds bacha samdrup, the wish-fulfilling
horsewhip, which accomplishes whatever the rider desires. In his left he holds
the wish-fulfilling jewel. Distinctive to this image is the zi-stone ring on
Gesar’s right thumb, which is modeled after a ring possessed by Chögyam Trungpa
Rinpoche, himself a descendent of Gesar of Ling.
The original tangka
was painted by Noedup Rongae. Noedup is an artist to the Kalapa Court and a
treasure to both Shambhala and the Himalayan Buddhist world. His paintings can
be found in numerous Buddhist centers in Asia and the West. Noedup escaped from
Tibet with his father in 1958 and came to North America in 1973. He painted
many well-known tangkas in Shambhala, most notably the Shambhala
Lineage Tangka.
